Biography

Biography
Recently hailed by the Financial Times for her "large and lush mezzo-soprano," Texas native Laura Vlasak Nolen has quickly established herself on the operatic scene. Ms. Nolen was recently honored by New York City Opera with the Richard F. Gold Career Grant which is awarded to a young American singer who appears destined for a major career. As she continues to garner critical acclaim for each new appearance, it is no wonder Opera News claims "talent like hers can't possibly stay a well kept secret for long."

Engagements in the 2010-11 season currently include a return to the Metropolitan Opera for its production of Les contes d'Hoffmann, Adalgisa in Norma with Lyric Opera of Kansas City, Fenena in Nabucco with Palm Beach Opera, Ines in Maria Padilla with Opera Boston, Mendelssohn's Elijah with the Phoenix Symphony, and Verdi's Requiem with Opera Naples. In the 2009-10 season Ms. Nolen appeared as Giulietta in the Metropolitan Opera's production of Les contes d'Hoffmann, and was also engaged for the company's productions of Elektra and The Nose. She also appeared as Samira in The Ghosts of Versailles in a return to the Wexford Festival Opera.

In 2008-09 she returned to the Metropolitan Opera to reprise the role of Waltraute in Die Walküre as well as to sing Inez in Il trovatore; sang the role of Iras in Antony and Cleopatra with New York City Opera; Dorotea in Pedrotti's Tutti in maschera at Wexford Festival Opera; Dorabella in Così fan tutte with Madison Opera; and as soloist in Elgar's The Music Makers, a work for mezzo-soprano, chorus and orchestra with Dallas Symphony Orchestra. She also performed as soloist in Rossini's Stabat Mater with the New York Choral Society at Carnegie Hall, in Messiah with both the Philadelphia Orchestra and the New Choral Society, and in Bach's St. Matthew Passion with the Berkshire Choral Festival.

Other highlights include her return to the Metropolitan Opera as Waltraute in Die Walküre, and Tisbe in La Cenerentola at Spoleto Festival (USA). She performed Haydn's Mass in Time of War with The Washington Chorus at the Kennedy Center; sang as soloist in Beethoven's Mass in C with the Honolulu Symphony; Dvorák's Stabat Mater with the Bel Canto Chorus and Orchestra; appeared as Isabella in L'italiana in Algeri in gala concerts sponsored by UNESCO in Paris, France and New York City; sang the title role in Giulio Cesare at Glimmerglass Opera; the role of Malcolm in New York City Opera's production of La donna del lago; an engagement with the Opera Orchestra of New York in their production of Otello; and, in a reengagement with the Caramoor Festival in summer 2007, Rossini's Petite Messe solennelle and Pierotto in Linda di Chamounix. In concert she appeared as soloist at Avery Fisher Hall with the Richard Tucker Foundation under Asher Fisch conducting members of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, in Mendelssohn's Elijah with the Danbury Symphony, and in Mahler's Das Lied von der Erde with the Westfield Symphony.

Ms. Nolen made her professional debut singing Third Lady in Die Zauberflöte at Cleveland Opera - a role which she later reprised in her debut with Dallas Opera. Other past operatic highlights include engagements with the Metropolitan Opera for its productions of the world premiere opera An American Tragedy and Die Walküre which toured in Japan. She made her debut at New York City Opera in 2005-06 singing Sélysette in Ariane et Barbe-Bleue which she later recorded with the BBC Symphony under the baton of Leon Botstein. Ms. Nolen has also sung the title role in Opera Theater of Connecticut's production of Giulio Cesare, Fanny in Strauss' Intermezzo with the Sante Fe Opera, Eustazio in Handel's Rinaldo with Berkshire Opera, and Enrichetta in I Puritani and Isaura in Tancredi, both with the Caramoor Festival.

An active concert performer as well, Ms. Nolen has appeared as soloist in Mozart's Requiem with the Westchester Philharmonic, Handel's Messiah with the Danbury Chamber Orchestra, Mozart's Vespers with the Lubbock Chorale, Vivaldi's Gloria with both the Texas Tech University and the First Congregational Church of Ridgefield (CT), Honegger's King David with the Lubbock Symphony, and scenes from Die Zauberflöte with the Cleveland Orchestra.

Ms. Nolen was the New England Regional Winner and National Semi-Finalist in the 2005 Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions and has won Encouragement Awards in the 2005 George London Foundation Competition and the 2006 Sullivan Foundation Competition. She is also a recent finalist in the Bel Canto Vocal Scholarship Academy and has participated in the Renata Scotto Opera Academy at both the Music Conservatory of Westchester and in Rome at the Accademia di Santa Cecilia.

Berksire Opera - Rinaldo

07.09.05
“Young Laura Vlasak Nolen (Eustazio) showed a lush, beautiful mezzo with formidable technique: clearly a Handelian star in the making."
Opera News Online

“Mezzo-soprano Laura Vlasak Nolen, with a voice of 19th-century magnitude yet convincing Baroque agility (she essayed terrific roulades in Act I's "Sulla ruota di Fortuna"), took the part of Goffredo's brother Eustazio."
Clifton J. Noble Jr., The Republican

“There was plenty of mezzo timbre to go around: Laura Vlasak Nolen, who sang Eustazio (another Crusader) produced a dark, velvety tone…”
Allan Kozinn, The New York Times

“Young mezzo Laura Vlasak Nolen brings to her sincere, but not wholly formed work, the primal thrill of a major voice, she sounds like a Stephanie Blythe in the making.”
Richard Dyer, The Boston Globe

“Laura Vlasak Nolen indicated a nicely developing coloratura contralto as Eustazio…”
Richard Houdek, The Berkshire Eagle

10.11.05
“...another, even more velvet-voiced mezzo, Laura Vlasak Nolen, gave no end of pleasure as Sélysette, the most vocally prominent of the imprisoned wives.”
Leighton Kerner, Opera News

“The outstanding voice is Laura Vlasak Nolen’s sumptuous mezzo as Sélysette.”
Andrew Clark, Financial Times, UK

“Also admirable was Laura Vlasak Nolen as Selysette, the wife who speaks for the group: Her plaintive, luxuriant mezzo made her an ideal foil to Ms. Behle.”

Danbury Chamber Orchestra – Messiah

12.23.05
“Excuse me if I jump immediately to the musical offering of one particular soloist. I don't expect to ever hear in Danbury, maybe anywhere, a better presentation of the mezzo-soprano arias than that of Laura Vlasak Nolen. Impressed as I was by her voice in last year's Messiah, I was completely enthralled this year. The voice ranges from powerful to gentle, with remarkable coloration. She proved this brilliantly in "He was despised and rejected."

From my seat far back in the church, her voice arrived ever on pitch, effortlessly controlled and produced. Hers is a major career in the making. The reviews from her New York City Opera debut, in "Ariane et Barbe-Bleue," by Paul Dukas, of "Sorcerer's Apprentice" fame, were most laudatory.”
Jim Pegolotti, Danbury News Times

01.13.06
“Best of the bunch that I heard: the talented tenor Dimitri Pittas and the blazing mezzo Laura Vlasak Nolen; Vlasak Nolen's "Cruda sorte" was astonishingly full-blooded; one wonders what she'll be capable of a few years from now.”
Brian Kellow, Opera News

“A few of these young people sounded opera-ready. Laura Vlasak Nolen's mezzo-soprano seems on the verge of opening up into something of considerable size and style.”

New York City Opera - La donna del lago

03.24.07
“New York City Opera's new production of Rossini's sweeping saga of the North, "La donna del lago," was not the dullest evening of opera I've ever witnessed, and for that I'm grateful to Laura Vlasak Nolen. A mezzo-soprano with a husky voice, a veteran's aplomb and a plentiful supply of nuance, Nolen sang the role of Malcolm, one of the lake-lady Elena's three would-be swains (which would have made it a pants role if she had not been wearing a kilt). It should not have been up to a singer in a supporting part to keep the opening-night performance single-handedly afloat.

Nolen wandered through Rossini's melodiously war-scarred Scotland like a talented refugee, singing with dignity and standing around as if waiting for something: for someone to direct her, for the rest of the cast to snap out of its stupor, for the orchestra to catch up.”

Glimmerglass Opera - Giulio Cesare

07.07.08
"Mezzo-soprano Laura Vlasak Nolen, in the pants role of Julius Caesar, projected conviction and dominance as the great conqueror, yet also conveyed tenderness in “his” love scenes with Cleopatra. Her voice arched easily over the many phrases, which she finished with great finesse. Her chest tones were wonderfully dark and true.

The two had some wonderful duets and each had several solo arias of exquisite lyricism, which pulled the audience in and made the opera’s three-plus hours fly by. Cleopatra’s “I weep my fate” of Act 3 and Caesar’s aria of Act 2, which Nolen delivered effortlessly while seated in a chair, were special."

Glimmerglass Opera - Giulio Cesare

07.16.08
"Mezzo-soprano Laura Vlasak Nolen as Giulio Cesare and soprano Lyubor Petrova as Cleopatra performed with assurance, fine intonation, excellent understanding of character, and great dramatic intensity. Nolen looked convincingly masculine - strong, with noble carriage (she says it helps to have two brothers) - and performed arias of lament, sadness, military bravura, and longing with all the necessary subtlety and stylistic accuracy.

And she and Nolen sang an exquisitely balanced love duet at the opera's close. These arias were performed in true baroque style, with skillful ornamentation and beautifully emotional dynamic contrasts."

Glimmerglass Opera - Giulio Cesare

07.17.08
"The title role, as well as two others, were originally written for alto castrati. Here, the role was sung with superb musicianship wed to bravura acting by mezzo, Laura Vlasak Nolen.

Nolen's triumphal entrance, “Presti omai” was powerful and focused, and her abrupt dismissal (“Empio diro”) of the fawning Achilla, Tolomeo's general, was rapid but note-perfect with some fine ornamentation on the A repeat with an effective, seamless drop into chest register. Later, alone in his tent contemplating Pompeo's ashes, Giulio's aria on the vicissitudes of fortune (“Alma del gran Pompeo”) was performed with pensive warmth, while the taunting “Va tacito” in the presence of Tolomeo and Achilla — sung with one boot firmly planted on a miniature pyramid — was informed with appropriate arrogance."

Wexford Festival - Ghosts of Versailles

11.09.09
"There were some fine additions to the large cast, most notably Laura Vlasak Nolen's Samira. Nolen made a strong case for the role, which was written for Marilyn Horne: she's a real contralto, with a rich, evenly produced voice. She's got wonderful presence, and she moves better than Horne ever did, as this Samira's dance incorporated everything from Irish step dancing to a macarena that morphed into belly dancing, to terrific comic effect."

Wexford Festival - Ghosts of Versailles

01.11.10
"As Samira, the harem girl whose "Turkish" aria sparks the last stretch of Act I, Laura Vlasak Nolen had plenty of opportunity to show off her natural comic brilliance. Like all first-rate comediennes, she was never guilty of watching herself be funny, and her vocal pyrotechnics were astonishing."
